Duchy Pickleball Ladder

Purpose of the ladder league

  • to offer players at all levels a competitive environment to shine.

  • to enable players at all levels to play with a fixed partner to prepare for tournaments

  • to play people from other clubs

  • to play at times of the day that suit the individuals

Structure of the ladder

The ladder is being set up as a box ladder.

It is initially being set up with 4 boxes but can be expanded if needed.

Each box will have 6 pairs in and they will all have to play each other over a 6 week period and they will be ranked by their results with the top moving to the next box and the bottom moving down.

Registration Process

Send an email to lisakeaton@icloud.com with your chosen partner and roughly which box you want to appear in.

An email will be sent to all participants within the box of the participants and their email addresses.

Players can enter with two different partners but if both partnerships are in the same box they will score 0 for their match.

Ladder Rules

  • Any player playing in the league must consent to all the rules

  • All matches must be under Pickleball England’s rules (other than you will be allowed to use the badminton service line as the kitchen line where no kitchen line is marked)

  • X40 balls should be used

  • Each match will be the best of 3 games. You should play all 3 games even if a couple has won the first 2. Most courts will be booked for an hour and if there is still time you should try and use the court for the whole hour even if it is not part of the matchplay

  • Each game will be first to 11 by one clear point

  • The winning couple will email the result to lisakeaton@icloud.com

  • Rankings will be done by matches won. In the event of a draw it will be decided by head to head results. If still drawn it will go down to points

  • No matches can be tied. If someone is more than 15 minutes late and the match cannot be finished within the hour slot it will be forfeited by the couple who were late.

  • If a pair is a no show or postpones after fees have been incurred the match will be forfeited and the pair who did not show will be expected to cover all the court fees unless the court is used for an alternative purpose. If they refuse they will be removed from the ladder

  • If a pair plays no matches they will be removed from the ladder

  • At the end of the period the top pair will replace the bottom pair from the box above them

  • Once the ladder is up and running any new teams will have to join the bottom box unless a couple is removed from a box higher up (that may be more suitable)

Requesting Matches

  • Either couple can request a match via the email address sent to participants in each box or if they are both in Spond by private message on Spond

  • You should aim for a venue that is roughly equidistant from each couple eg if a couple from Bodmin is challenging a couple from Penzance then Truro is a fair place to play

  • I have listed possible venues below

  • All courts should be booked for an hour

  • You should check (but not book) the availability of the venue and give 3 different time options. Please use commonsense -if you are challenging someone who works pick a weekend or evening slot.

  • If they cannot make any of your options the other couple are responsible for coming up with 3 options

  • It is vital that it is clear in writing who is responsible for booking and paying for the court. You should also put in writing the exact time and venue

  • It should also be put in writing who is responsible for providing balls and if played in a village hall, nets.

  • If people want to put matches into DUPR all 4 people must consent prior to the match and anybody who does not want to, should not be put under any pressure.

  • Each couple is expected to pay half of court costs. It is up to the couple to chose a method to suit them eg BACs, PayPal or Settle Up

  • Any court costs owed to the other pair should be transferred prior to the match

Safety Guidelines

Pickleball can be a dangerous game and it is not uncommon to see people getting hit by the ball or a paddle. Bones can be broken  and expensive dental work wrecked. You play pickleball at your own risk.

There are however some guidelines that can lessen your risks

  • It is advisable to wear eye protection while playing and mandatory for anyone under 18 playing in the ladder league

  • Do not run backwards– no shot is worth going flying for

  • Wear a decent pair of court shoes and try and dry your soles if they get wet

  • Most pickleball is played on badminton courts which can have a limited space around the court. Be very aware of your surroundings and tailor your game accordingly

  • Stop play if a loose ball is on or close to your court.

  • Always warm up before you play and keep hydrated.

Safeguarding and Rules around under 18s participation

  • No child under 14 will be allowed to participate in the ladder league

  • Any child who does participate will have to play with a parent. That parent will be responsible for their child at all times, including in communal areas such as changing rooms

  • It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure the child will be able to play in a competitive environment where balls may be hit hard

  • Protective eyewear is mandatory for those under 18

  • If a child is playing in a match, that match will need to be held at a venue with a manned reception desk

  • No child’s contact details should be used in registration or ever given out

  • If anyone has any concerns they should contact vickie_shelley@hotmail.com

Advice for Adults playing against Children

  • Keep interactions open and visible

  • No one-to-one situations in private

  • Avoid physical contact unless essential for safety

  • No phoning, messaging or social media contact with the child

  • No photos or videos of children without their parent’s permission

  • Maintain professional boundaries

  • Communicate with parent(s), not the child

  • Report any concerns to vickie_shelly@hotmail.com
